Post Retirement Life: Volunteer Opportunities

For many retirees, planning for retirement simply means thinking about the financial aspects. What most people don’t realize is that going from a busy work schedule to nothing on the agenda isn’t always as glamorous as it sounds. Once the to-do list is complete, finding activities to fill your day can be difficult. Not to mention, the change from a social environment to naught can be a difficulty in itself. If you’re used to being around peers, retirement can be quite an adjustment.

Retirement doesn’t have to mean your productivity ends. Instead of making the switch from busy to bored, try volunteering. For many organizations (especially non-profits), the people who have the means to donate their time and knowledge can truly make a huge impact. As a retiree, you have a wealth of knowledge that is invaluable to any organization.

In the Howard County, Maryland area alone, there are many organizations that need retirees. Whether it’s related to your previous career or an opportunity to pursue a new passion, volunteer work is a great way to connect with peers and meet new people, all while making an impact in your community.

So how do you find organizations with volunteer needs? There are several websites that act as a marketplace for volunteer needs:

Volunteermatch.org allows users to search by organization or by cause. Search through current volunteer openings and find an institution that fits your needs. http://www.volunteermatch.org/
